Victory for underdog highlights first-round in England

The greatest upset in the history of the competition highlighted the opening weekend of the Rugby World Cup with two-time champions Springboks going down to minnows Japan.
South Africa’s shock defeat and below-par performance is also reflected in the statistics taken from the Vodacom Rugby App.
As a game changer in South African telecommunications, Vodacom have set out to give rugby supporters the best experience while the world’s best teams battle it out for the Webb Ellis Cup, with the App.
Japanese fullback Ayumu Goromaru was almost singlehandedly responsible for the demise of one of world rugby’s superpowers and deservingly topped some of the statistics on the App.
Goromaru contributed 24 of his side’s 34 points with a try, five penalties and two conversion kicks to top the Points and Penalty Goal categories.
Springbok stalwart Schalk Burger was one of the few shining lights for South Africa topping the first-round of the Rugby World Cup’s Carries statistics.
Burger made 22 Carries with one of the weekend’s standouts, England’s Mike Brown making the second most with his 20.
Brown was one of England’s most dangerous weapons in the opening match against Fiji where he scored a brace of tries while continuously asking questions of the defence with his piercing runs.
He was worth his weight in gold on attack making double the amount of Clean Breaks than his nearest rival in this category while he also topped the Defenders Beaten and Metres Run categories.
Brown made six clean breaks while he beat 11 defenders for a total of a whopping 191 metres.
Fiji’s Nemani Nadolo and Tim Nanai-Williams of Samoa are tied second in the Defenders Beaten bracket with seven each.
Lock Lood de Jager was the best South African in this category where he ranked 20th with the four defenders he beat.
While Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis are among the top-ranked players in the Turnovers Won bracket with two, he also conceded the most penalties along with Tonga’s Lua Lokotui with four calls going against them respectively.
