Vodacom walked away as winners in the Best Use of Digital Communications in Sport category at the 2015 Discovery Sport Industry Awards in Sandton on Thursday evening.

The Vodacom Rugby Stats App came on top among six nominations in the Best Use of Digital Communications in Sport category.

This accolade follows the Gold achievement in the Most Innovative App category at the New Generation Social and Digital Media Awards in Johannesburg at the end of October.

Vodacom was named among some of the top sporting brands and organisations in South Africa earning no less than four nominations in three different categories for the annual Discovery Sport Industry Awards.

Sponsorship agency Openfield had been at the forefront of all four of the nominated campaigns.

Vodacom’s Brand Manager – Sponsorships & Regional marketing, Janus Kloppers said winning the Best Use of Digital Communications in Sport category was a massive honour for Vodacom.

“We aim to be at the forefront of innovative digital media in the sport sponsorship space and winning this prestigious award is a clear indication that we are on the right track,” Kloppers said.

“It is a massive honour to be recognised for the hard work that is invested in the different campaigns in the sport sponsorship space.

“This would not have been possible without the hard work by the various departments and our sport sponsorship agency, Openfield.”

The Discovery Sport Industry Awards reward the greatest achievements across the entire business of sport, including the most outstanding and innovative work in marketing, PR, advertising, community investment and sponsorship.

Openfield sponsorship director Michelle van Eyden said the award was a major feather in their cap in the competitive sport sponsorship industry.

“We are delighted that our work for Vodacom has received well-deserved recognition” van Eyden said.

“It is a great privilege just to be nominated in three out of the eleven categories, alongside the leaders in the sports industry in our country.”

Openfield are proud to have been on a journey with Vodacom, spanning three decades, as their strategic sponsorship partner.

The telecommunications giant earned nominations in the Best Use of Digital Communications in Sport, Best Sponsorship of a Sport Event or Competitions and Sport Participation Event of the Year categories.
