Last week we experienced the start of a Varsity Cup promising to deliver exciting rugby and many future stars of South African rugby. The referees have indicated their confidence and optimism that the revised interpretation of the laws at breakdown is now allowing for a more open and fast moving game.
During the first week the most impressive starts were made by Maties and Pukke. Shimlas and Ikeys battled to a draw in a windy Port Elizabeth whilst Tukkies would like to rectify losing a tightly contested match with Pukke. NMMU and TUT would strive to get points on the board and avoid playing catch-up rugby from the start.
The most tightly contested matches in the 2nd Round should be Ikeys v Pukke and Tukkies v UJ. Ikeys will have home ground advantage against a strong Pukke side. It will have to be seen whether the injuries sustained against Shimlas will hamper the Ikeys who have become known as slower starters.
