South African franchises won two of the four matches they were involved in in round-five of the 2014 Vodacom SupeRugby competition over the past weekend.

Toyota Cheetahs fullback Willie le Roux and Lions flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff continue to make major contributions for their respective teams.

This is evident from statistics taken from the Vodacom Rugby Stats App, one of the most comprehensive rugby stats Apps in the world, which is free to download.

Dead-eye Boshoff was once again the leading points-scorer this weekend as he contributed 24 of his side’s points with three conversions, four penalties and two drop goals.  He was the only player that has scored points through drop goals in the fifth round, while he is only two penalty conversions away from reaching his 100 points in only six Vodacom SupeRugby matches. Boshoff is the leading points machine – scoring at an average of 18.8 points per match – with Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen 40 points behind him.

The fleet-footed Le Roux has been in superb form for the Cheetahs, despite his side struggling to hit their straps in their first five matches of the season. Le Roux made 18 carries – the most over the past weekend – in the Cheetahs’ 60-27 defeat to the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday.  He is followed by Beauden Barrett, who was the Hurricanes’ star-performer against the Cheetahs, and is level on 15 carries with Luke Braid (Blues), Sarel Pretorius (Cheetahs), while Ben Smith made 14.

Le Roux is the leading the overall Carries from all five rounds with 53, and also shares the top spot in the Offloads category with Blues fullback Benji Marshall with five apiece in their respective matches this weekend.

The stats from the Cheetahs’ match against the Hurricanes paints a picture of tireless tackling by the South African franchise. The Free State side made a whopping 170 tackles compared to the 112 by the Hurricanes, and it is not surprising that Cheetahs players top the Tackles Made category from round five.

Cheetahs forwards Boom Prinsloo (24 tackles), Lood de Jager (17) and Phillip van der Walt (17) made the most tackles off the weekend.  They were followed by Lions captain Warren Whiteley (17) and the Western Force’s Matt Hodgson.
