The World Rugby U20 Championship is bringing rugby to thousands of young fans on Wednesday as Broughton Park prepares to host a festival for 145 teams.

Children from year seven to year ten from schools across the North West will enjoy the 7s festival on Wednesday June 15, organised and run by the Rugby Football Union as part of the World Rugby U20 Championship legacy programme. The day will be the biggest rugby event of its kind in the North, with over a thousand young players taking part.

Training base to current U20 title holders New Zealand, Broughton Park is an ideal location for a festival aiming to give as many school children as possible a rugby day to remember. Girls from year seven and eight will play a 7-a-side tournament, as will boys from year seven to year ten. In addition, girls from year eight and ten will play in their own competition.

All the youngsters taking part are invited to match day three at either the AJ Bell Stadium, where England will face Australia in a crucial Pool B fixture, or Academy Stadium ,where South Africa face France among two other fixtures.

“The target for this event was 50 teams, so to have 130 keen to be there is a really significant achievement. It really underlines the demand for our sport in the North West,” said RFU Rugby Development Director Steve Grainger.

“Our aim is to broaden rugby’s reach and this event should go a long way towards achieving that, while offering a fantastic day for all the young people playing. There is then the chance to attend the World Rugby U20 Championship and maybe be inspired to reach the highest level, should these young players continue in the sport.”
