The Golden Lions Rugby Union is pleased to announce the extension of the contract of head coach, Johan Ackermann until 31 October 2016.

Ackermann will be acting as the head coach of both the Super Rugby team and the Currie Cup side at the GLRU.

Ackermann was officially appointed as head coach of the GLRU senior team in 2013. He has led the Golden Lions to victory in the 2013 Vodacom Cup competition, gained readmission into Vodacom Super Rugby and reached the semi-finals of the 2013 Currie Cup since. Ackermann has also enjoyed a successful 2014 season thus far, celebrating one of the best Lions performances in the Vodacom Super Rugby tournament as a whole.

GLRU Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli is proud of the team’s performance this season and believes the re-signing of Ackermann and several senior players shows stability and growth within the Union.

“It is positive news to have Johan within the GLRU camp for the next two years, strengthening the Lions family,” shared Straeuli.

“Johan possesses great coaching ability and he is a man of strong character and perseverance. We are proud of the work Johan has done with the team over the past two seasons and we are looking forward to him leading us to many future victories.”

Ackermann is also looking forward to a prosperous time ahead at the GLRU and is grateful for the opportunity he has been afforded to renew his contract.

“I would like to thank the executive of the GLRU and the CEO for the confidence they have shown in me,” Ackermann said.

“Furthermore, I would like to thank my excellent coaching team and my Lions players for their continuous commitment, support and efforts. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead and am excited to take the Lions from strength to strength. “
