Crusaders coaches Todd Blackadder, Dave Hewett, Tabai Matson and Aaron Mauger launched the Christchurch City Mission’s new can collection initiative, ‘Canstruction®’, today with a mini can building challenge of their own.

Canstruction® is an international non-profit organisation that has introduced fun can collection events in over 215 cities worldwide. Christchurch’s inaugural Canstruction® design and build competition will see teams create massive 3D structures at next year’s Ellerslie Flower Show out of canned food, which will then be .donated to the Christchurch City Mission.

City Missioner Michael Gorman adjudicated today’s mini-Canstruction® and said he was impressed with what the Crusaders coaches achieved in a very limited timeframe.

“These guys only had 15 minutes to build their Canstructions, whereas teams in the real competition will have 40 hours to make their sculptures.  They both did very well, but in the end Tabai and Aaron’s new stadium, while impressive, relied a little too heavily on materials other than cans. So Todd and Dave were crowned the Canstruction champions with their Crusaders castle,” Mr Gorman said.

Blackadder said his team was always going to have the edge over their backline competitors: “We had age, experience and practicality on our side.  Aaron and Tabs tried to be showy with their sculpture, as backs have a tendency to do, but it was the meticulous planning and faultless execution of the forwards that ensured our win.”

The Christchurch City Mission Foodbank provides over 26,000 food packages per year to members of the local community; and donations of non-perishable and canned foods is essential to the operation of this service.

“Today’s fun competition was just the beginning of what we hope will be an exciting new event for Christchurch that will help to raise awareness of what the City Mission does and bring in lots of food donations so that we can continue to help those members of society that most need us,” Mr Gorman said.
