Suffering their first defeat to the Irish on home soil may be devastating for Springbok fans but based on the statistics alone the match could have gone either way.

Thanks to a courageous defensive effort by the tourists they managed to defy the odds by beating South Africa 26-20 with a man short for the majority of the game.

Both teams suffered a setback at the same moment when South African born flanker CJ Stander was red-carded for a tackle on Springbok flyhalf Pat Lambie that saw him stretchered off with a concussion in the 23rd minute.

The Boks dominated almost all the statistics on the All Out Rugby App that should have seen them come out on top but a lack of discipline and handling errors kept Irish eyes smiling.

The hosts had a healthy advantage in terms of possession of the ball with 56 percent compared to 44 percent to the Irish while the Boks also enjoyed 57 percent of the territory.

Both sides scored two tries but it was the Irish that made better use of their limited resources converting pressure into points.

The historic victory boiled down to paddy power with Ireland flyhalf Paddy Jackson’s three penalties and drop goal making all the difference.

South Africa made more than double the amount of running metres in the match, 585m compared to the 280m of the visitors.

This converted into 141 Carries to 93 with the Boks beating 19 defenders compared to the nine by the Irish.

Ireland made two more Clean Breaks than the home side but made the most damage at the break down areas. They won nine turnovers with the Boks making only one while they also collected 15 loose balls to eight.

The Irish made their own luck, particularly on defense where they absorbed attack after attack from the South Africans. They were forced to make 147 tackles missing 19 while the Boks made 90 and missing nine.

South Africa’s downfall could be attributed to the fact that they could not hold on to their possession thanks to the high error rate and penalties conceded.

They made 22 handling errors compared to the six by Ireland while they also conceded 10 penalties in the match.

They lost two scrums on their own ball while stealing two of the Irish’s throws in the lineouts.
