Day one matches of the Oceania Rugby Junior Championship have been postponed due to extreme weather conditions on the Gold Coast.

With a severe weather warning of heavy rain and Gail force winds exceeding 90 km/ph expected, the decision was made in consultation with each nation to postpone Friday’s matches until Saturday 2 May.

The matches will now stand as;

Saturday 2 May
1pm, Japan v New Zealand
3pm, Australia v Samoa

Oceania Rugby Championship Director, Wayne Schuster emphasised the importance of player safety.

“Naturally we are disappointed that there will be games today, however player welfare must always be our highest priority.

“The decision to postpone the matches had the full agreement of every participating nation and we look forward to starting the tournament once conditions are expected to improve on Saturday 2 May.”

Australian U20’s Head Coach, Adrian Thompson supported Oceania Rugby’s Championship.
“The decision made by Oceania Rugby to postpone the matches was made in the best interest of all players and as host union we welcome this decision.

“The Australian team will look forward to kicking off our campaign tomorrow when conditions are expected to improve.”
