Three teams have booked their places in the final of the popular Die Burger Rugby Competition for High Schools: Paarl Boys High (WP), Augsburg (Boland) and Excelsior (WP).

Paarl Boys High had a titanic battle with HTS Drostdy (Boland) in their semi-final clash. The match was played at Worcester and the Drostdy-team was fired up with huge local support.

Paarl Boys High attacked from the first minute and were always dangerous with quick off-loads, but the vital last pass or two went astray and they could not get points on the board. They also lost a couple of vital line-outs close to the try-line of Drostdy.

Drostdy defended aggressively and took their chances on the attack. Midway through the second half they were leading by 13-3 but a great come-back by Boys High resulted in two tries. Final result: Paarl Boys High 15 HTS Drostdy 13.

In the other semi-final clash in the division: Big Schools, Outeniqua will play Marlow at Cradock on Monday 25 August.

MEDIUM SCHOOLS

Augsburg (Clanwilliam) struggled to beat a fired-up Milnerton (WP) team. The match was played at Milnerton High.

Augsburg has a big pack of forwards, but their handling skills let them down and that meant that they could not go forward with the ball in hand.

The backs of Milnerton showed a lot of skill and speed, but they did not get enough possession to test the defence of Augsburg.

Final score; Augsburg 17 Milnerton 12

* The semi-finals between the schools of SWD and Eastern Province will be played on Saturday 23 August between Punt (SWD) and Brandwag (EP). The match will start at 11:30. The match will be played at Mossel Bay (Punt High School).

SMALL SCHOOLS

Excelsior (WP) had tough opponents in Groenland (Franschhoek, Boland), but managed to win by 21-14. Excelsior coached by the experienced Philip van Rooyen played as a unit and were deserved winners. Groenland showed a lot of character and the Boland Union can be proud of their performance.

Excelsior won the final of the small school’s division in the 2013 Die Burger Competition.

* The finals between the SWD and Eastern Province Schools will be played to-morrow (23 August) at Mossel Bay (Punt High School). Kairos (Heidelberg) will represent SWD, and Bertram High will represent Eastern Province. The match will kick-off at 10h00.
