Loading...The Queensland Premier Rugby preliminary final kicks off on Sunday at University of Queensland and Sunnybank come head-to-head at Ballymore.
The rematch of last year’s prelim kicks off at 3:05 pm with the University of Queensland looking to turn around the disappointment from their major semi-final loss to GPS. UQ knocked off Sunnybank on both occasions this year but the Dragons are coming off a last-minute victory over Wests.

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND v SUNNYBANK – Preliminary Final | Ballymore, kick-off 3:05 pm
UQ entered the 2017 finals series with just one loss to their name and was heavily tipped to waltz through to the grand final before GPS added a significant speed bump to that journey. The 42-24 major semi-final result has forced UQ to prepare for their third-straight preliminary final clash and a rematch of the 2016 prelim.
UQ may have got the wood over Sunnybank on both occasions in 2017 but the Heavies will be well wary of the Dragons’ knack for finals. Last year, Sunnybank had UQ beat before a late Tom Pincus penalty goal saw the Heavies snatch a 32-31 win to book their place in the grand final. The heartbreak from that result will undoubtedly play on the minds of the Dragons’ squad because they haven’t featured in a grand final since 2014.
Sunnybank’s season was on thin ice with 10 minutes remaining in last week’s minor, before stringing together 10 points to come from behind and snatch victory. Chazz Mahina’s match-winner put an end to Wests’ fairytale story and ensured Sunnybank will return to Ballymore. The Dragons were far from their best but if anything, that that should have the Heavies worried because the Dragons still found a way to win.
UQ has won two-straight minor premierships but has fallen short on semi-finals weekend. Having dropped just five games in the last two years, the side must re-ignite the attacking flair that they have consistently shown. Sunnybank is no strangers to attacking footy so the stage is set for the exciting preliminary final clash at Ballymore.
