Queensland Premier Rugby Preview – Round 9

Loading...Round 9 of Queensland Premier Rugby kicks off this Saturday, and with the St.George Queensland Reds having a bye, 14 Reds squad members will be turning out for their respective clubs.
The Game of the Round will see Brothers head to Oldmac Oval to face Sunnybank, with prop Taniela Tupou bolstering the Brethren front row while Jake McIntyre and Henry Taefu while line-up for the Dragons. This match will be live streamed via Facebook LIVE and www.redsrugby.com.au.
The second LIVE stream game will see be the inter-varsity clash between Bond University and the University of the Queensland on the Gold Coast. Alex Mafi and Cadeyrn Neville will feature for Bond, while Moses Sorovi and Adam Korczyk will return to the starting Red Heavies XV. This match will be LIVE streamed via www.redsrugby.com.au.
Michael Gunn, Andrew Read, Izack Rodda and Kirwan Sanday will all feature for Easts in their clash against GPS at Yoku Road. James Tuttle and Chris Kuridrani will start for the Gallopers.
The clash between Norths and Wests will take place at Hugh Courtney Oval, with Lachlan Maranta lining up for the Bulldogs at outside centre.

Sunnybank v Brothers – Oldmac Oval, 3.20pm
This weekend’s Game of the Round will see Sunnybank host Brothers at Oldmac Oval. Both teams are separated by only one point on the table in this third vs the fifth matchup. Sunnybank can jump Brothers on the table with a win, after losing a tight contest against GPS last week. The Dragons blew a couple of tries with handling errors that proved costly when GPS crossed in the dying stages. With back-to-back victories under their belt, Brothers are slowly regaining momentum as the season halfway points approaches. The champions are back in the top four and will be eager to continue their win streak and put some distance between themselves and Sunnybank on the table. Bond University v University of Queensland – Bond University RFC, 3.20pm
Bond will host the University of Queensland in the battle of the students this week. The two sides may be at different ends of the table but Bond should be confident after an inspiring performance last weekend. Trailing 17-3 at the break, Bond had one final attacking opportunity to win the game but ultimately fell short 25-22. UQ are coming off their toughest encounter of the season. The Heavies trailed Easts in the dying stages before Josh Birch crossed on the final play of the game to snatch victory from the Tigers’ grasp. Prior to Saturday, UQ had been winning games rather comfortably and have acquired a target on their back, as teams look to become the first to knock off the heavyweights. GPS v Easts – Yoku Road, 3.20pm
Second-placed GPS can distance themselves from the chasing pack when they host Easts at Yoku Road on Saturday. The Gallopers rebounded from their loss against Brothers to come away with a tight win over Sunnybank. They now have a five-point buffer in third place and will be hopeful a win against Easts will keep that buffer intact. The Tigers were seconds away from handing UQ their first loss of the season last Saturday but a late try stole it for UQ and pushed Easts out of the top four. Their performance proved they have the ability to match it with the top sides and they’ll be desperate for a win at Yoku Road this weekend. Easts pushed the competition leaders like no side has this season. On Saturday they can redeem themselves by knocking off the second-placed Gallopers.

Norths v Wests – Hugh Courtney Oval, 3.20pm
Fresh off the bye, Norths will be raring to go when they host Wests at Hugh Courtney Oval on Saturday. It was a tough start to the season for the Eagles who took seven rounds to record their first win. However, their 57-20 win over Souths a fortnight ago was a cohesive performance that the Eagles can build from. There has been nothing wrong with the Eagles attacking structures but defensive lapses have seen them let close games slip. On Saturday, they’ll need a strong defensive performance against an in-form Bulldogs side. Wests are coming off their third win in a row after they held off a valiant Bond University comeback effort. The Bulldogs have announced to the competition that they aren’t to be taken lightly in 2017. Will Wests winning ways continue or will Norths breakthrough win lead to something bigger for the Eagles?
