The Pampas XV and DHL Western Province continued their unbeaten campaigns in this year’s Vodacom Cup after both South Section teams secured convincing “away” victories this weekend.

The Argentineans recorded their sixth victory in the 2011 competition and maintained their position at the top of the South Section log following their 46-20 win over the Ford Pumas in Witbank.

The Pampas XV achieved maximum points from their clash against the Ford Pumas by running in five tries which were scored by Agustin Gosio (2), Maximiliano Nannini, Nicolas Bruzzone, Juan Imhoff and Gabriel Ascarate. Nicolas Sanchez kicked four conversions and two penalties while Santiago Iglesias also added one conversion.

The Ford Pumas’ points were scored by Deon Scholtz (try) and flyhalf Coenie van Wyk who kicked five penalties. The defeat for the Witbank team ensured that they ended the weekend in third position on the North Section log with 18 points.
In Welkom, DHL Western Province were in impressive form and held the Tasol Solar Griffons scoreless during their comprehensive 60-0 victory at the North West Stadium.

The Capetonians ran in nine tries which included six five pointers from their wingers – JJ Engelbrecht (4) and Shuaib Samaai (2). Fullback Lionel Cronjé, centre Johann Sadie and Reuben Johannes were the other try-scorers for the visitors.
Cronjé kicked six conversions and a penalty to end the match with a personal points’ haul of 15. He is currently the leading points’ scorer of the 2011 Vodacom Cup (78) and is 24 points clear of the second leading points’ scorer – Van Wyk (Ford Pumas).

GWK Griquas maintained their position as the leading team in the North Section log following their 23-16 victory over the Sharks XV in Kimberley on Friday evening. The hosts ran in three tries which were scored by Leon Karemaker, Wesley Wilkins and Burger Schoeman. Flyhalf Earl Rose kicked two drop goals and one conversion.

The MTN Golden Lions moved in to second position on the North Section log following their 37-19 victory over the Toyota Free State Cheetahs at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday. The Johannesburg team gained maximum points from this fixture after running in four tries which were scored by Dries van Schalkwyk (2), Dusty Noble and Martin Bezuidenhout. Flyhalf Burton Francis kicked three penalties and four conversions.

The Toyota Free State Cheetahs’ points were scored by fullback Franna du Toit and prop Marcel van der Merwe who both scored tries while flyhalf Johan Goosen kicked three penalties.

In the other Vodacom Cup matches played this weekend, the Vodacom Blue Bulls secured their second victory of the season following their 29-28 win over the Eastern Province Kings in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

The Valke and Boland Cavaliers also achieved their second victories of the competition after they defeated the SWD Eagles (33-26) and Platinum Leopards (43-14) respectively. The Border Bulldogs and the Welwitschias played out a 20-20 draw in the other game of round six.
