Upsets kicks up a storm in first round of Vodacom SupeRugby

16 FEBRUARY 2015 – The opening round of the 2015 Vodacom SupeRugby competition had its fair share of upsets with six of the seven matches won by the visiting teams.
Statistics taken from the Vodacom Rugby App makes for some interesting reading with South African players and teams dominating some of the categories.
On the South African front the Toyota Cheetahs caused the upset of the weekend with their local derby victory over the Cell C Sharks in Durban on Saturday.
The Free State side made the most Kicks from Hand with the 27 balls they put to the boot with the Blues and the Chiefs equal on 24 in their New Zealand derby.
The Sharks only kicked five less than the Cheetahs while the DHL Stormers, who claimed a rare victory over the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus Versfeld also made 22 kicks from hand.
In the player-vs-player stats in the Kicks from Hand category, six players shared the same tally with Damian McKenzie (Chiefs) , Handre Pollard (Bulls), Cobus Reinach (Sharks), Joe Pietersen (Cheetahs), Mike Harris (Rebels) and Willie le Roux (Cheetahs) each making 10 kicks.
Playing in his maiden Vodacom SupeRugby match, Chiefs flyhalf Damian McKenzie’s name is a constant in the top-five of the positive categories.
Sharks flyhalf Patrick Lambie’s contribution of 24 points to his side’s score may have been in vain but it was good enough to top the Vodacom Rugby App in this category.
He is followed by the Blues’ Ihaia West on 18, Christian Lealiifano of the Brumbies (17) in third place while McKenzie and the Stormers’ Demetri Catrakilis had a share of fourth place with 13 points apiece.
Sharks flyer Lwazi Mvovo topped the Metres Run bracket with the 125m he covered against the Cheetahs with the Chiefs’ James Lowe behind him with 111m.
Mvovo’s team-mate fullback SP Marais also cracked the top five of this category with the 101 m he ran over the weekend.
Vodacom Bulls wing Bjorn Basson once again demonstrated that he had no issues dealing with the high ball sharing the Kicks Caught category with Colin Slade of the Crusaders with their seven catches.
The Light Blues’ back three of Basson, Jurgen Visser (six catches) and Francois Hougaard (five) were kept busy thanks to a Stormers aerial assault.
Stormers centre Damian de Allende led his side’s charge on Saturday with an all-round good performance and also cracked a top-five place in the Defenders Beaten bracket along with winger Dillyn Leyds.
McKenzie topped the list beating seven defenders while Tevita Kuridrani of the Brumbies was behind him with six.
Leyds beat five defenders while De Allende and the Waratahs’ Israel Folau had the better of the opposition defence on four occasions each.
