The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) and the St.George Queensland Reds have formed ‘Queensland Rugby Relief’ to help Rugby clubs affected by Cyclone Debbie this week.

Fundraising efforts for ‘Queensland Rugby Relief’ will occur at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow (Saturday, April 1) ahead of the Reds’ Super Rugby clash against the Hurricanes from Wellington in New Zealand.

QRU’s fundraisers will be at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday encouraging all fans to purchase match-day raffle tickets, with profits going towards financial and practical relief to Rugby clubs, particularly in the Mackay District Rugby Union region, which was significantly impacted by Cyclone Debbie in Queensland this week.

QRU’s principal naming partner St.George Bank are also getting behind ‘Queensland Rugby Relief’ and will match all donations at the stadium this Saturday dollar for dollar.

‘Queensland Rugby Relief’ fundraisers will be out again asking for ‘gold coin donations’ on Sunday at Ballymore Stadium as the Queensland U20s take on NSW Gen Blue in the 2:00 pm Grand Final of the Super U20s Championship, the ARU’s National U20s competition.

QRU CEO Richard Barker said: “Rugby clubs, especially in the Mackay region of Queensland, have been impacted by the wind and the rain Cyclone Debbie brought to our state this week.

“We’ve all seen the pictures of the Rugby posts blown sideways by the Cyclone earlier in the week in Bowen. The Rugby community is resilient and always helps those in need. We are encouraging Reds fans to come to the game on Saturday to cheer the Reds and to show solidarity with other members of our Rugby family who have been hardest hit by this cyclone through donations to ‘Queensland Rugby Relief’.

“We are still receiving reports of other clubs in Queensland who have been affected by this week’s weather, so we will continue to fundraise in the coming weeks and direct funds to those clubs most severely affected.”
